Come here principal Rina Geoghagan talk more about plans for the year and see pictures of our school in the Lincoln library. Thursday April 20 from 6:00-7:00 pm. Hope to see you there, Gators!
Dear Decatur Families,
I wanted to provide a few updates as we head into April. I have been working with the school district to establish the bell times for next year. Currently, Decatur is scheduled as a Tier 2 school. This means the school day will begin at 8:35 a.m. and end at 3:05 p.m. Decatur is scheduled as a Tier 2 school to alleviate congestion around the school and neighborhood. There is still a chance the school district will receive funding from the city to move to a two tier system. If anything changes I will communicate with families.
There have been a few questions about the Mascot for the school. We have decided to use the original Decatur Gator as the mascot to honor the school and neighborhood. Teachers are excited about our new mascot and are coming up with lots of fun ideas to incorporate the mascot into the school culture. All Decatur students will have the opportunity to help design the Gator mascot that we use for our t-shirts. I will send out the entry form via email after I receive the contact information for families who enrolled during Open Enrollment. Incoming fifth grade students will vote on the winning design.
The Dectur School teaching staff will be hosting an informal picnic on the playground at Decatur on Thursday, May 25th from 5-6:30. Please bring your picnic, blankets, balls, frisbee, etc. Families are welcome to come early and stay late, but we wanted to respect the Cascadia PTA meeting that will take place at Lincoln starting at 7:00 p.m. on the same day.
Lastly, I will be hosting a principal chat on April 20th in the Lincoln Library from 6:00-7:00 p.m. I hope you are able to join me. I will be sharing pictures of the building and answering questions.
The time has come to be official. Join us for our charter PTA meeting! It will be held Tuesday March 7 at 7 pm in the Lincoln cafeteria. Bring your checkbook to join (11 dollar membership fee), vote in officers, and have a voice in your new school. Principal Rina Geoghagan will also be on hand to share more details about the coming year.
From Superintendent Nyland:
Dear Cascadia and Decatur community:
I am writing to let you know that Principal Rina Geoghagan has been selected to become the principal of Decatur Elementary School. Due to capacity concerns at Cascadia Elementary School, the district recommended and the school board approved the decision to open Decatur for our Highly Capable Cohort (HCC).
Ms. Geoghagan brings experience and extensive knowledge of the HCC program and the Cascadia community. She was instrumental in the original move of the APP/HCC program from Lowell Elementary to Lincoln High School, has served as the design principal for the new Cascadia site, and has demonstrated strong leadership during the conversations and decisions regarding Cascadia and Decatur. We are excited that she will be able to bring this expertise and passion to serving the Decatur community.
Ms. Geoghagan earned her Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Latin American Studies and Master of Teaching degrees at the Evergreen State College. Ms. Geoghagan taught for eight years in the Shoreline School District. Her teaching experience includes teaching the Highly Capable Cohort and serving as an instructional coach in Shoreline. She also taught middle school in Seattle schools before becoming a principal.
The process for finding a permanent replacement for Ms. Geoghagan will begin shortly, and will follow a similar process as used for Decatur. We are looking at finding an interim principal to support Cascadia during the final months of the current school year. Executive Director of Schools, Jon Halfaker will be meeting with the Cascadia Building Leadership Team prior to Mid-Winter Break to share updates and next steps.
We look forward to coordinating opportunities for the Decatur community, staff, and students to welcome Ms. Geoghagan in her new role before the school year ends.
Please join me in welcoming Principal Geoghagan to the Decatur community.
Larry Nyland, Superintendent
We are very excited to get our parent group up and running! If you are interested in serving on the board of our PTA, please come to our steering committee meeting in the Lincoln library Wednesday February 15 at 7 pm. There we expect to talk about job descriptions, roles, plans for the coming year, and start to talk about budget. We will have a charter membership meeting a few weeks later.
